At RGV Cosmetic Surgery & Vein Center, we offer patients transumbilical breast augmentation procedures, also known as TUBA surgery. There are many ways that a breast implant can be inserted, and the placement of the incision depends greatly on the patient’s unique needs, body structure, and particular preference. Casually regarded as the “belly button approach”, the transumbilical breast augmentation technique can help to reduce visible scarring, may minimize the length of the procedure, and may even reduce recovery time. As the opening is made in the folds of your navel, the incision can be hidden. However, not all patients may be ideal candidates for the TUBA approach.

This 38 year-old woman from the McAllen, Texas area presented to my cosmetic plastic surgery clinic requesting a Mommy Makeover. She is 5’4” tall and weighed 127 pounds. During her consultation, the patient wanted a transumbilical (belly-button) breast augmentaion (TUBA) to avoid any scars on her breasts, but her partner asked about silicone implants for a more natural feel. Because the patient needed an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) as part of her mommy makeover surgery, we discussed a Trans-Abdominoplasty Silicone Breast Augmentation (TASBA), which is an advanced modification of the TUBA, wherein I can place silicone implants without any scars on the breasts. We placed 425cc Mentor High Profile Silicone Gel implants in the subpectoral (dual-plane) position using the Keller Funnel. Her new body is shown at 2 months, and she loves her cosmetic surgery results!

Transumbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA)

This 27 year-old woman from the Edinburg, Texas area presented to my cosmetic plastic surgery clinic requesting breast augmentation. She is 5’2” tall and weighed 135 pounds. She was interested in a Transumbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA) to avoid any scars around her breasts. Her case was challenging due to her tight inframammary folds, which limited how big of an implant we could use. She was otherwise an excellent candidate for the Belly Button Boob Job – she had no breast ptosis (droop) and had minimal breast asymmetry. This patient also planned to stage her abdominoplasty at a later date, and we discussed exchanging her TUBA saline implants for larger silicone implants at that time, using the abdominoplasty dissection to avoid any scars on her breast (a TransAbdominoplasty Silicone Breast Augmentaion (TASBA). For her TUBA, I placed 420cc Mentor High Profile implants in the subpectoral position bilaterally. Fill volumes were 470cc on the left and 475cc on the right. She was a 36A and is now a 36D. Her results are shown 1½ year post-op. Her implants settled beautifully and she loves her cosmetic surgery results.
