Dermal Filler Radiesse for Hand Augmentation cleared by FDA

On June 4th, it was announced that the injectable dermal filler Radiesse, for hand augmentation, was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration.
Medscape Medical News reported earlier this year, the Food and Drug Administration’s General and Plastic Surgery Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee voted 9 to 4 that benefits are greater than the threats. Most panelists also concluded that Radiesse is safe and effective.
The company says that Radiesse delivers instant volumizing to the treated area, and can aid in the reduction of prominence of veins and tendons in the hands. This gives the hands a natural looking, smooth feel that can last up to a year.
This product is an opaque dermal filler made up of a water-based gel carrier mixed with synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres. It was approved in the US in 2001 for off-label hand augmentation use, and is currently approved in 52 countries for the same usage.
