What Is Rib Modification?
Rib cage modification is considered an exotic cosmetic surgical procedure because it is rarely performed. This procedure is most common for those in the transgender community or for women who have very boxy figures and would like a defined waist. Few surgeons are able to perform rib cage modification procedures, and it requires very highly skilled expertise in order to safely perform this surgery.
Rib cage modification for waistline narrowing is a deeply misunderstood procedure. It is common for individuals to think that this is a dangerous procedure when in reality, it is safe when done by a surgeon who is well educated and trained in the procedure. Often, rib cage modification is called “rib cage removal,” however, this is a myth as the rib is not entirely removed. In fact, only a portion of the rib is removed allowing the remaining rib to perform as normal.
This procedure is designed to improve the shape of the waist by removing floating ribs that are not necessary for organ protection and take up space. Some patients can only achieve the waist size they desire with rib removal, with a greater chance of success when combined with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) for more dramatic results.
How Are Rib Modifications Performed?
During this procedure, the amenable bottom floating ribs are removed. There are two basic approaches for rib cage modification: either to go through a modified tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) approach from the front of the body or to make two incisions on the patient’s back. Some patients prefer not to have those external scars on their back, so many opt for the modified abdominoplasty approach.
The floating ribs are very quite easily removed. Floating ribs do offer minimal protection to the kidneys, so they are not fully resected during this procedure. Instead, only the front portion is removed. This allows for a smaller waist while also leaving protection for the kidneys.

How Is Recovery After Rib Modification?
Rib removal recovery, if done without a tummy tuck, is approximately 10-14 days. After this point, patients may return to working, walking, and functioning normally. This approach is not as common as the modified tummy tuck approach as most patients dislike scars on their backs.
If a patient opts for rib removal with the tummy tuck approach, the recovery time is also 10-14 days.
Patients whose jobs require heavy lifting should take a full 6 weeks off after this procedure. It is recommended not to lift more than 10 pounds following this procedure until after the 6-week mark.
