SCAR CARE TREATMENT

What Kind Of Scarring Can Be Expected From Treatment?
Whenever an incision is made, there will be a scar. At RGV Cosmetic Surgery & Vein Center, we make every effort to make the smallest possible incisions and hide the scars for all surgeries. These scars will vary depending on the procedure, and we will explain the location and size of scars you can expect when you come in for your initial consultation. Immediately after your procedure, we place a protective tape on the incisions to protect the wound and encourage healing. However, scars will continue to mature for about a year after surgery. During this time, there are a number of techniques we use to minimize the visibility of the scar.
What Can I Do To Reduce Scarring?
During the immediate healing period, it is important to avoid submerging the wound in water, as this can lead to infection. This is a two week period during which patients should avoid baths, swimming, and hot tubs. At this point, scars will begin to darken, thicken, and grow redder. This phase of healing will last approximately three to four months. During this time, we recommend placing silicone over the incisions, which is proven to help scars flatten. This will prevent a swollen, rough scar from forming. We also encourage patients to use sunblock to protect the scar. Tanning will trap the darker pigments in the scar, resulting in a scar that is permanently darker and more visible .
What Can I Do To Eliminate Scarring?
After approximately four months, the scar enters the “maturation phase.” At this point, the scar fades and becomes thinner. It is at this time where we can perform additional treatments to eliminate the appearance of a scar. We recommend a laser skin resurfacing treatment using a non-ablative fractional laser. This improves the appearance of the scar while triggering collagen production for further results. Patients may need multiple treatments to achieve their desired results, although no downtime is required for this treatment.
